Tree stump grinding

A Guide to Handling Debris and Stumps

After you have cut down a tree, you will be left with debris and a stump. Fortunately, it’s possible to remove both the debris and the stump quickly. The material that is left over can be used for projects in your yard and/or as firewood. Here are a few of the most important things to know about removing stumps and debris after a tree is removed.

Stumps Can Be Ground Down

In most cases, stumps can be removed by grinding. This will turn the stump into a fine powder, which can be used as a fire starter or to create pathways in your yard. Keep in mind that this dust tends to decompose relatively quickly. This is true of the stump as well. So, it’s best to grind it down very quickly.

Small Stumps Can Be Ground With a Chainsaw

If a stump is too small to be ground down with a large grinding machine, you can have an arborist remove it with a chainsaw. A chainsaw will make it possible to turn the stump into fine dust.

Stumps Can Be Uprooted

While this method will create a hole in your yard that has to be filled in, stumps can often be removed by uprooting them. In some cases, this is not possible as it depends on how deeply rooted the tree was. Tree roots can sometimes extend as far as 20 feet deep in some cases. In most cases, though, tree roots usually only extend 2-6 feet underground.

Stumps Can Be Converted to a Mulch-Like Material

The material left behind after stump grinding is very lightweight, which makes it easy to move around. Furthermore, the fact that it decomposes easily makes it a great addition to garden beds as it can help add nutrients to the soil.

Debris Can Be Turned Into Firewood

Debris left over from a tree can be used to create logs for firewood. Remember to dry the wood outdoors for a period of time before using it as firewood, though. On the other hand, sawdust from a ground stump is extremely flammable and dries very rapidly, which makes it a perfect material to start a fire.
